Purpose Beyond Today: A call to pray and fast for a hurting world

One of the greatest tactics of our spiritual enemy is to keep our prayers focused on our own needs, wants, and desperations.

If he can keep our eyes on our own tiny battles, he will successfully weaken a portion of God’s Army. Rather than discovering our God given power in Jesus to fight for the Kingdom of God and all eternity, our petitions will be limited to our own little kingdom and today.

I’m not proclaiming it wrong to pray for ourselves and families, but it is wrong when our petitions do not rise for needs beyond us.

Satan wants us to feel helpless as we read of Christian persecutions in Iraq, children of believers beheaded, and women raped by the ISIS soldiers.

He wants to tie our hands in the battle against mental illness that wages war in our world threatening and taking the lives of so many we love even revered actors and well known Christian evangelists’ sons.

He wants us to believe that this is the way it has to be…this is just the dark world we live in today.

He also wants each of us to believe that we aren’t spiritual enough for our prayers to make a difference.

A Call to pray and Fast

But don’t believe it.

Because we are not alone in the fight, and we were made to be apart of something much bigger than ourselves.

[tweetability]We were made for eternal purposes beyond today, beyond our life on planet earth.[/tweetability]

We were created with the capacity to love, but we were also made to fight. Fight for justice. Fight for freedom. Fight for the light to overcome the darkness of evil threatening our world today.

Jesus was not a wimp.

And neither are we His followers.

“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” (Eph. 6:10-12)

We were made to fight.

How do we fight? Not with literal swords and shields, but with prayer and fasting and Scripture.

“In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows (mental lies) of the evil one. Take up the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep praying for all the saints.” (Eph. 6:16-18 addition mine)

[tweetability]Do you hear the call to your greater purpose?[/tweetability]

“The Lord thunders at the head of His army; His forces are beyond number, and mighty are those who obey His command.” (Joel 2:11)

If you would like to join me in prayer and fasting, I have begun a group fast on Facebook. We are fasting each week beginning at sunset on Wednesdays to sunset Thursdays, or supper to supper if that is easier. I post prayer suggestions and scriptures on my personal page, Andy Lee (Andrea Stone) and prayer updates on my Andy Lee (Author) page. Hope you join us! Let’s fight for the persecuted Christians, the mentally ill and depressed, Israel, and the Kingdom to come. Claim your purpose beyond today.

  1. You wrote some powerful truths here. We believe that our prayers are not spiritual enough to make a difference and of course focusing on ourselves to the point that our prayers are self-centered. I love your call to fight and I will pray for all and especially the group that you started that your prayers stay focused and intentional. Thank you for visiting my blog and so glad I got to visit here.

Tearing up. Thank you for leading this group and for helping us and showing us that we are not helpless but we are empowered to pray and fast about all of these things. <3

    1. It is truly His empowerment…His grace. I’m not sure where it even came from, but suddenly yesterday I was strengthened and assured that our prayers are powerful, especially together. Much love.
