Bite of Bread (Feb. 10-16): Promises of God

I love throwing things away–to a fault. I now regret some of my purges.

I remember, during one of my organizing days, throwing away a book entitled, The Promises of God. There was something about those little Bible promise books (that you could buy for $1.99) that I didn’t like.

I’m not sure what caused my dislike. I don’t know if I didn’t have faith, if I feared praying them and not receiving what they promised. Or if I felt people used them like magic. More than likely I thought it unnecessarily took up space on my book shelf when I owned a Bible with the same scriptures.

Twenty years later, I appreciate the books of promises because they make it easy to find the promise you need. You don’t have to look through the whole Bible. The promises are categorized! What a great concept. (smile)

I pray God will redeem my waste. Maybe somebody found it at the dump. Maybe they’ll uncover it a thousand years from now when books are obsolete.

While perusing library shelves last week, I found a book like the one I threw away, and I borrowed it. (Love the library!)

Every chapter is based on a scripture-promise. I’m enjoying it so much, I knew I had to share it with you.

The promises of God bring peace to me. Assurance. Faith. They remind me of my role and God’s.

The scriptures I chose for this week’s Bite of Bread are promises of peace, heaven, God’s presence and direction, answered prayers, and granting the desires of your heart.

I can’t think of a better way to start my day than with a promise from God.

I hope you’ll join me. Pour some coffee, light a candle, grab your journal. Write down these promises. Start making your own promise book.

  1. I love my little blue Promises of God book, too. I can select a category and declare those promises over my situation. I also hate clutter. I’m a purger too Andy, often over doing it at times. Sometimes I look back and think, ” I wish I’d held on to that.” Is there a scripture for us over-zealous purgers?

    1. I would love to see your little blue Promises of God book. As far as a scripture–nothing comes to mind, but yesterday I had another moment when I had thrown something away I shouldn’t have. My son even gave me permission to throw away the sheet of paper with his grades on it (AKA: report card.) Today we received an e-mail from his lacrosse coach to bring report cards to verify eligibility to play! Are you kidding? UGH! I’m such a bad mom!

Let’s start a support group, ‘Over-Purgers Anonymous.” No, you’re not a bad mom. You’re just like me, we hate clutter and sometimes we over do it… just a bit.

        1. Thanks friend! I like the support group idea. :)

I enjoy you every day, Andy. You always uplift me and inspire me to look more closely at The Lord.

    1. Thank you so much my friend. What sweet words. Thank you for reading! LOVE YOU!

  3. What I find even more encouraging than using a pre-printed book is making my own, in a way. When I needed to be reminded of God’s love for me (or when I was determined to grasp it) I used the concordance to find all the passages I could about love. Then I hand wrote the ones that applied because it took more time for me to think about the words and get them in when I did it that way. I spent days, weeks, months even, reading them out loud, putting my name in – making them personal. Later, when I needed them, I could go back and read through all or just a few. It usually takes only a few anymore to get me back mentally where I stand in His love.

I also did this for condemnation and guilt and other subjects. I use the computer these days, but I still don’t cut and paste the passages. I still prefer to type them myself – again taking the time to think about the words more, letting them get into me more deeply.

Thanks for the reminder, my friend!

    1. This is a ((GREAT)) idea Kay! I hope a lot of people read the comment. I might need to quote you in a post. Writing the scriptures, searching for them really does impress them further into my spirit. Thanks so much for sharing!
