7 Scriptures on “Beautiful”#BiteofBread

The other day, I stood in a friend’s kitchen chatting and waiting on her guests to arrive, when one of the little neighbor girls came in to ask for a drink of water.

She sported a purple one-piece with pink polka-dots, and her brown ringlets, damp from the water sprinkler, stuck to her chubby, sun-kissed cheeks.

“You are just beautiful” one of the other women in the kitchen exclaimed.

I waited for her to deny it or at least say thank you, but the round cherub in purple simply smiled and nodded in agreement.

She was beautiful.

She didn’t doubt it or deny it as we have learned to do. She didn’t talk about her hair being a mess or that she would like to loose a few pounds.

She simply agreed with fearless, unashamed confidence in herself.

And I thought, What happens to us? When do we stop living with such confidence? 

I know we all probably remember that hateful comment made by some junior high boy-jerk that stuck a knife into our beauty bubble. We can hear him telling us that Jason Caskill would be our only opportunity for a boy friend . . . ever! (I really wanted to call him when I was engaged!)

We can remember when we started comparing ourselves to the Homecoming Queen and her court.

But I think the biggest problem with our “beauty” crisis, more than those painful growing up years, is our perception of what “beauty” is.

Perspective is everything.

If only we could look through God’s eyes to see ourselves and others and take off the distorted glasses the world gives us.

What the Bible Says

One of the most famous verses in the Bible about this comes out of the story of the prophet Samuel anointing a young shepherd boy named David.

Samuel followed God’s lead to meet with Jesse of Bethlehem and his sons. He knew God would tell him which son would be anointed as the next king. Read the scripture with me:

“When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and thought, “Surely the LORD’S anointed stands here before the LORD.’ But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look on the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart” (1 Samuel 16:6,7).

Oh for eyes to see what God sees. To see beauty that He loves and to look into the heart of the person rather than the outside. Sometimes we can do this for other people, but it’s harder to do that for ourselves, isn’t it?

My tag-line of this website is “dig deep to live fully” and I’ve always focused on the dig deep part of the Bible, but I’m shifting to the “live fully” aspect! Oh, friends, when we can live in that place of beautiful acceptance and confidence of who we are as a child of God, I believe we can start living full lives–lives of joy, peace, humble confidence and with eyes that sees as God sees beauty.

When we live fully, we have a lot to give. We live generously.

    and like a root out of dry ground.
He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him,
    nothing in his appearance that we should desire him.

Proverbs 31:30: Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting;
    but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.

Philippians 4:8 “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”
