How I Find Purpose Series: Part 2

Last week we started talking about finding our purpose, and I gave you the first step to that process–at least for me. That step was to worship God.

Psalm 37:3,4  became my life verses during a time of searching, loneliness, and restlessness.

Trust in the Lord 2

What does it mean to trust?

According to Webster, trust is:

Confidence in…

  1. the honesty
  2. the integrity
  3. the reliability
  4. the justice

. . . of another person or thing.

Is it hard for you to have confidence in the honesty, integrity, reliability, and justice of God?

It is difficult to trust HIM when our focus and trust is not on HIM.

I think we get confused in the trust department because our “trust” is focused on other things rather than the goodness of God. Our trust is placed in our circumstances, answered/unanswered prayers, our health, our jobs, our families, our doctors, the prognosis. Yet we know that at any given moment all of these things can crumble.

Only God is always good.

I’ve struggled finding value and purpose. Part of that struggle came out of focusing on what the world said was valuable. I knew better. But I couldn’t shake it. I’m convinced though, that I’ve found value and purpose because I’ve spent so long (over 20 years) investing everyday in my relationship with God. I don’t say that to pat myself on the back. I was desperate. There was nowhere else to go in my loneliness and searching but to the Bible, prayer, and worship.

Worshiping God and trusting HIM go hand in hand. I’m not sure which comes first. Some may find that trusting HIM helps them worship HIM. But for me, the worshiping helped me in the trust department.

We trust people who we know. People we’ve spent time talking to. People who’ve proven their goodness to us.

If you are having trouble in the “trusting God” department, hang out with Him. Go to coffee every morning with Jesus. Pour yourself a cup. Open His letter He wrote to you (the Bible) and have a conversation with Him. Talk out loud. Be honest. Write in your journal. Be intentional just like you are in your relationships with others.

What other things can you do to know God better and grow your trust? What has helped you trust HIM?

I pray you have a wonderful weekend! See you Monday with a new Bite of Bread reading plan and more posts next week on finding your purpose.

Much love,

  1. After a completely exhausting couple of weeks (daughter-in-law trips to ER, surgery, taking care of two toddlers, etc), I am finally having a little time to catch up on my blog reading. I love this post Andy. This is my heartbeat…the importance of time spent in our relationship with God. It is that time with HIM, in His WORD where we find our worth. Our purpose. It is how we come to know His heart.

    1. Oops! Touchy tablet posted too soon! There have been many times I have lost my way and been so terribly lonely, hurt, rejected, etc. I can honestly say that my only healing and true direction came from time with God in His Word. Am I always so faithful? Unfortunately no. Life tends to get in the way. But too much busy chaos without time with Him and I get discouraged, defensive, and too easily feel sorry for myself. Time spent with Him corrects my vision…and my heart. Thank you for the heartfelt post Andy!

      1. Hi Debbie! Thanks so much for stopping by and sharing your thoughts! You’re a kindred spirit.
