I used to have a cat that woke me up every morning at 4:00AM. She was hungry.
At the time Mike and I were sleeping on a futon in our living room (long story), so we were low to the ground–low enough for her to poke my arm with her claw. It hurt! After I screamed and a few pillows were thrown at her, she decided to wake me more gently. She was a smart cat.
One day I awoke before her paw touched my arm. I peeked, faking sleep, to catch her in the act. With concentrated effort, Allie (cat) seemed to hold her breath as she controlled the speed and weight of her claw. It took her 5 minutes to get the angle and pressure just…. right before she made contact. S-L-O-W-M-O-T-I-O-N.
I always obliged her demand, especially when she was sweet and didn’t hurt me. I’d get up and feed her, consider God’s sovereignty in my waking, and make myself a pot of coffee.
Friends thought I was crazy. They would’ve gotten rid of that demanding, furry alarm clock.
As frustrated as I was with her demands, and as unnatural as it was to be up hours before the sun woke, those were unprecedented mornings with God. There’s something wonderful about silence in a sleeping house and spending hours in the Bible preparing for the day. It was a super busy time in my life. I was juggling working on church staff, going to school, and fulfilling my duties as wife and mommy. I’m convinced that God knew I needed to GET UP! ((EARLY)).
I no longer have a cat. And I no longer get up at 4:00, but I still try to have time with Jesus before dawn.
When do you like to spend time with Him?
Do you ask Him to wake you or help you find time to spend with Him? Ask and ye shall receive. I promise.
“In the morning, O Lord, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait in expectation.” Psalm 5:3
