Could You Use Some Rest?

August 11, 2019August 11, 2019 / Andy/ 1 Comment

In this hustle, bustle world, many of us need rest, but it’s often hard to find. Unless you like naps like I do. I love naps, especially on Sunday afternoon. Climbing onto my bed with a light afghan to cover me, I breathe in the sleepy afternoon air and drift off to sleep for an hour or so. I usually …

He sees you. He sees you in your pain, heartache, He sees you. He sees you in your pain, heartache, and restlessness. He sees you in your unhappy marriage or unfulfilling job. He sees your need to be valued and loved. Come meet El Roi, Hagar, and the Samaritan woman and discover what it means for God to see you.

You can find this 3 day reading plan on the YouVersion Bible App. It's a perfect plan for the weekend! Just go to the app, and search for the God who sees. Right now, it is the third plan from the left. Invite your friends to read it with you.

It's my first of (I hope) many reading plans on @youversion After a two year wait, I was asked to submit a sample, and I was approved to write for them. May the Lord be praised. He is so kind to us.

He saw me 2 years ago when I thought this would never happen. The door was closed. I gave up, but he never did. Trust His timing. Trust open and shut doors (I know this is so hard.) But trust He sees your heart, your efforts, and your faith. And He'll bless it.

Rejection Stings How young were you the first ti Rejection Stings

How young were you the first time you experienced rejection?

Personally, I know rejection entered my life at a very young age, probably in kindergarten. But my first vivid memory of this painful human experience happened in middle school.

Jason Smith asked me to “go” with him, and I told him I had to think about it.

So, his friend John thought he would help.

“You really should take him up on this offer because he may be the only boyfriend you ever have,” he reasoned.

His words pierced deep. He prophesied rejections all my life. No other boy would want me to be his girlfriend.

Remember, I was only in seventh grade.

Yes, my hair was a frizzy mess rather than a perfect feathered Farah Fawcett’s. Braces embellished my smile, but he didn’t have to be so mean.

John’s clever statement made me mad enough and hurt enough to reject Jason.

I rejected him before he could reject me.

(Sorry, Jason.)

All of us knew rejection as kids, and we know it now. As adults, rejection comes in the form of not getting the job, the promotion, or the award. Some of us know the rejection of a parent, spouse or child.

It happens.

And it hurts.

Does it help to know we’re in good company? Maybe not, but I have to remind us that Jesus Himself endured rejection by the very people who also served God, the religious leaders and teachers of the law. That rejection culminated to crucifixion on a cross. I dare say none of us reading this article have faced such brutal rejection from our peers.

I find it interesting that it’s the painful part of Jesus’s humanity–his knowledge of rejection, pain, grief, betrayal, and abandonment which connects our hearts with His. Could rejection be apart of what Paul was describing when he wrote, “For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, so also our comfort abounds through Christ” (2 Cor. 1:5).

Jesus gets it. I hope that comforts you. Leave a comment or message me if you are struggling with rejection and need prayer. The entire article and scriptures to help are on a link in my bio.

It’s been a heartbreaking week, but the Lord kno It’s been a heartbreaking week, but the Lord knows what our souls need. And this little visit holding little August Ruth, red tulips, the coolest coffee mug I’ve ever drunk coffee out of, and these words from a book that’s sat unopened on my desk at least for six months came at just the right time. Right when I needed them most.

If you’ve been hurt lately, if the rug was pulled from underneath your feet, know that He is with you and He’s got more for you. This isn’t the end but the beginning. Don’t miss one holy moment. Look for the blessings and the opportunity to bless.

I’m so thankful for FaceTime. I’m so thankful for FaceTime.
I was raw. Jesus’s words in Mark 11:24 reopened I was raw.
Jesus’s words in Mark 11:24 reopened a wound. I thought it was healed years ago. It no longer bleeds. It doesn’t even ooze, but there’s still a raw spot there, and I scraped it this week studying these verses about faith.

“Have faith in God,” Jesus answered. I tell you the truth, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea, and does not doubt in his heart but believes that what he says will happen, it will be done for him. Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.” (Mark 11:22-24)

How many of us struggle with this verse and all the verses like it?

Sometimes faith hurts.
It hurts when the answers don’t come, or the provision, or the healing. And we mustered every ounce of faith that we had, but the mountains did not move. They didn’t even budge. They just got bigger.

What do we do then?
I realized when I’m angry at him, I’m doubting his goodness, and that always reopens old wounds. But God taught me something else about those raw soul-hurts–those places where scriptures or teachings cause pain or anger to erupt rather than evoking peace, or faith, or joy.

Anytime faith hurts, God is inviting us to wrestle with him. He wants us to seek him in the pain.

If we don’t, these wounds will become strongholds of the enemy. If left unchecked, they become landmines just waiting to blow up when the right circumstances or scripture steps on them.
Sometimes when I’ve wrestled with God he has shown me my sin. But friends, when he revealed that sin, I felt no shame. Rather, I felt freedom. Again, a heavy oppressive mountain was moved.

Don’t be afraid.
Jesus is constantly inviting us into deeper places with him. More healing. Final recovery from those wounds that have had their way too long with our hearts. Don’t allow these places of hurt and pain be strongholds that keep us from living the abundant life of Christ.

It might take months. Maybe years. But I know if we keep on wrestling for the blessing of peace with him and understanding in this area, we might limp later, but we will walk away with a blessing. Who knows, maybe even a new name.

I love this picture. It’s my dad with my husband I love this picture. It’s my dad with my husband’s dad at our son’s wedding. Neither one of them travelled much or ever really visited us, so their presence at Stephen’s wedding was a miracle. Stephen was named after them.

This past year has been spent traveling across the country visiting them because of failing health. A week before Thanksgiving Mike’s dad passed away and my dad died a month later, Dec. 10 after a fall that caused a brain bleed.

Today is my dads birthday and Feb. 27 is Mike’s dad’s birthday. It seemed fitting to honor them both at this time and give the Lord our thanks for their lives and this past year with them. Though it was hard, the Lord orchestrated so many little details to help us.

My relationship with my dad had its ups and downs, but the Lord redeems. We had some sweet conversations as I sat with him in his room in the nursing home. I’d always take him a milkshake and bring my ice coffee for me. We watched football games and sat outside when I could talk him into it. He’d tell me stories of growing up peppered with with truths I had longed to hear and things I never knew. In the end, I think the most important nugget he gave me was, “Family is what matters most.”

He didn’t always live his life that way, but it meant the world to me to hear him say it. It will be a truth I’ll structure this latter part of my life around. Family matters most.

I love you, Daddy. Thank you for our last few years together. Happy birthday.
