Call of God, Gabriel, Mary, Virgin Birth

Elizabeth’s Doorstep

Mary of Nazareth

……It is her humanity that makes her character endearing. Mary had been in the company of The Angel who stands in the presence of God (Luke 1:19). She witnessed a piece of heaven itself. But even though she accepted the assignment, the “charitoo” given to her, she didn’t sit in her room waiting for it to happen. She did what any frightened, curious, and trembling person would do.

She ran to check out the proof.

Mary packed her bags and travelled to see the power of God. “And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into the city of Juda” (Luke 1:39 KJV).

I prefer this translation because it helps me envision Mary on her knees before Gabriel, and seconds after his departure, picking herself up, brushing the dirt off her skirt, and hastily preparing for her trip. She didn’t waste any time to experience firsthand the pregnancy of her relative–the one person who would believe the story she had to tell.

She ran to Elizabeth.

So many times I’ve believed that I heard from the Lord, but I found myself needing assurance. I do not doubt the Lord, but I do doubt my hearing and sometimes my sanity. I’m not any different from Mary in this department. I would’ve been on Elizabeth’s doorstep too.

How about you?

Scripture for the day: After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. After the fire came a gentle whisper….’What are you doing here Elijah?’ (1 Kings 19:12).
